Target Family Day Jawaahir performed and taught at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts' Target Family Day on October 11th. The theme of the event was opening doors to other cultures, highlighting cultures from around the world. Jawaahir represented Islamic culture and dance, performing and teaching the movements of Middle Eastern Dance. Master violinist and instructor Georges Lammam will present a lecture/demonstration about the basics of Arabic music. He'll help to uncover the secrets of its structure, and, using examples played on various instruments, give participants practical examples of tunings, intervals, rhythms, and improvisational structure in Arabic music. Arabic musicians Tim O'Keefe and Larua Harada will be performing another amazing duet, and Twin Cities premier lighting designer Jeff Bartlett returns to add his lighting magic to this show. Jawaahir's traditional dances bring to life the indigenous rhythms, distinctive costumes, and expressive dance traditions of Egypt, Lebanon, Tunisia, and the Saudi Gulf. Their contemporary pieces are an exciting fusion of East meets West and Cassandra's theatrical flair! at 8pm Sparkle comprises a shining array of new works from the Jawaahir dancers. Jawaahir company choreography shows consistently offer a variety of entertaining pieces in a multitude of styles and voices. They will be joined by special appearances from Jawaahir alumni and surprise guest artists. Jeff Bartlett, Twin Cities premier lighting designer will be lighting Sparkle this year.
